Set in occupied France during World War 2, Chasing Mona Lisa is replete with intrigue, adventure, action and excitement. Bombs explode, tension thickens, the pace quickens as events quickly unfold, tumbling one upon another, and the reader is drawn into the plot longing to know what happens next…and why. If that were enough to make a book fantastic, this one surely would be. As it is, it is a good, solid, read that will encourage most readers to keep turning the pages but it is a tad shy of fantastic. The characters aren’t quite as real as I would have liked them to be nor were the why of certain events explained as completely as I would have liked. In the end, after a thrilling story, the reader is left with a small amount of confusion.
Tricia Goyer and Mike Yorkey nearly hit a home run with this book. The story line is good, the action is fantastic and the historical aspects of it are solid and well researched. If the characters were just a bit more developed and the ending tied up a little better, it would have been a true winner. As it is, it is still a book that is worth your time and, in several ways, one that leaves you hoping for another book down the line.
